Counselling Skills for Health Visitors and Community Nurses

This 2 day course looks at some counselling skills and techniques that can help Health Visitors and School Nurses to understand the principles of helping their clients in relation to anxiety and depression.

Aims

To provide an opportunity to acquire knowledge or broaden an understanding of the CBT model
To enable learning and practice in some of the basic skills of the CBT model
To increase participants’ flexibility of methodology
To encourage those who are interested to pursue a further course of study in CBT practice

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

Describe the principles of CBT in relation to depression and anxiety
Apply principles to clinical practice
Implement basic CBT strategies
Use CBT to enhance current clinical expertise

Learning Objectives

Describe the historical context and underlying philosophy of CBT
Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical principles underpinning the CBT approach
Understand and implement the process of a CB assessment
Formulate clients’ problems from a CB perspective
Describe fundamental CB strategies
Understand the interaction of cognition, affect, behaviour and physiology
Describe the origins and role of schemas, underlying assumptions and negative automatic thoughts
